Irish Language Act must be implemented – Sheehan

Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan has said the commitment to an Irish Language Act must be implemented to protect the rights of Irish speakers.

Speaking after joining Dream Dearg and Irish language campaigners outside Stormont today, the West Belfast MLA said:

“The commitment to an Irish Language Act and strategy was a key component of the New Decade, New Approach document in January 2020.

“We now need to see delivery and legislation in place as soon as possible.

“The new DUP leadership need to make it clear that commitments made will be implemented during the current Assembly mandate, as was previously agreed.

“There is a responsibility on the Assembly and Executive to legislate to protect the rights of Irish language speakers without any further delay.”
