Sinn Féin MLA Sinead Ennis has today welcomed the announcement of the establishment of a Victims of Crime Commissioner Designate.

The party’s Justice Spokesperson said:

“The establishment of a Victims of Crime Commissioner Designate is an important step in ensuring the voices, needs and interests of victims of crime is front and centre of the criminal justice system.

“Whilst this role will be temporary until a permanent statutory Commissioner can be legislated for, it will nonetheless be a crucial role in providing a voice for victims and delivering better outcomes for victims.

“The role includes significant functions including promoting and encouraging good practice, reviewing laws and practices and making recommendations to the Justice Minister and wider justice agencies.

“I also welcome the comments from DOJ officials at last week’s Justice Committee that the Commissioner will have a particular focus on potentially vulnerable victims of crime, including victims of domestic and sexual abuse and hate crime.

“I look forward to working with the incoming Commissioner Designate to ensure that we continue to develop and transform our criminal justice system into one which puts victims’ needs at its core.”
