Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan once again called on the Infrastructure Minister to withdraw new planning proposals that will make it harder for those living in rural communities to build homes.
The Newry and Armagh MLA said:
“There is genuine concern that the planning guidance issued by the Department for Infrastructure will make it harder for young people and families to set up home in their rural communities.
“Councils and rural organisations such as the Ulster Farmers Union have warned that the consequences will be far reaching for rural planning if this guidance is adhered to.
“At Committee today I expressed these concerns with the Planning Officers from the Department for Infrastructure.
“I have again called on Minister Mallon to withdraw this guidance. The Minister needs to start listening to the concerns and frustrations of people in rural communities across the north and start to engage meaningfully with local councils to understand the potential impact of her new guidelines.
“It is vital that the planning system works for our rural communities.”
