Deirdre been involved in community and political activity all her life including local campaigns Sunshine not Skyscrapers.  Deirdre prides herself on always trying to provide the best representation possible for local communities. Deirdre Hargey was a Councillor for the Botanic DEA from 2010 to December 2019.

As a proud Belfast woman,  Deirdre was honoured in 2018 to take on the role of Ardmhéara of our City.  In that role, she has championed a rights-based agenda, including the Irish language, marriage equality, LGBT rights, women’s rights and workers’ rights.

In December 2019, Deirdre Hargey became the MLA for South Belfast after she replaced Máirtín Ó Muilleoir who retired. She was appointed as Minister of Communities and Deirdre was to start her new role in a global pandemic. She rose to the task and immediately ensured measures were employed to protect the North’s most vulnerable people and sectors with an innovative people first approach.

As Minister she has started the first building of public housing in the North in 5 decades. She implemented legislation to protect renters from eviction and poor standards of housing. She was the minister to start building the much awaited Casement Park.  has started a Job start scheme which is reskilling those who lost work during the pandemic.

She currently serves as spokesperson for Communities
